26 November, Walk leaders' forum, Friends' Meeting House, Scarborough

The idea of a Walk Leaders' Forum was the result of a conversation with one of our leaders on a coastal ramble in the Summer. We felt it would be good to organise an event to exchange ideas and encourage new leaders. After much deliberation by the committee the forum was arranged for a Saturday morning.

Most of our regular leaders and other interested members attended, 20 people in all, an excellent turn out.

Everyone was issued with an information pack containing material downloaded from the volunteer zone of the national Ramblers web site.

This included documents about the role of a walk leader, insurance policy, reporting incidents, recce report forms and ICE in case of emergency - cards. (There is a wealth of information freely available on this section of the web site, all well worth a look)

In order to focus our minds we split into groups and spent 15minutes discussing 'what makes a good walk' then another 15 minutes discussing 'what makes a good walk leader'. One of our leaders then gave us all tips about using maps and planning walks.

Coffee and home made cakes followed, then we all looked at the Ramblers Civil Liability Insurance policy and discussed issues arising, including non-members on walks, dogs, and recording and reporting incidents. This was followed by a general discussion including encouragement and support available for new leaders.

Overall feedback for the event was very positive and most people thought it was worthwhile. As a result we have three potential new leaders. - Tricia Mumford, Rambles Organiser.
